Dear Friends of Brian Willson, This Monday, June 3rd, Brian was hit by a car (SUV) while he was on his hand-cycle on his way to his Vigil & Solidarity Fast with The Hunger Striking Prisoners at Guantanamo. Brian was not seriously injured, but he has lots of soreness, bruises & muscle wrenching. His hand-cycle was pretty much destroyed. He was stationary at a corner waiting for this SUV to pass him. The driver turned right, into the wrong lane and ran into Brian as he was sitting there. Apparently she didn't see him. He ended on the ground with the cycle on top of his bruised body. Luckily his partner Becky showed up soon thereafter. Brian has not gone back to the Vigil at the Portland, Oregon City Hall, but he is continuing his Fast while he is recovering at home. I talked with Brian this morning. He and Becky were headed to the VA Hospital to see about his injuries. The driver who lives very near to where the accident happened, took full responsibility and felt very bad. As she hit him, one of Brian's legs came off, which really freaked her out. I asked Brian if he needed money to help pay for a new hand-cycle. He said he thinks her insurance will pay for one. They are quite expensive.
Here is what Brian wrote to me this morning: I do not have serious injuries but do have lots of soreness, bruises, muscle wrenching, etc. No broken bones. No bleeding. Serious damage to the handcycle. I am recovering at home resting a lot waiting to recover a cycle once again, perhaps more slowly now, but continue the fast indefinitely. Now in day 25.
