You are talking about two things:

 1) preserving history

 2) legal clearance

#1 is a technical issue while #2 is not.

For the technical issue, I think svn + infra@ experts should suggest us
what to do. You being one of them helps :-)

For #2, if you filed a CLA for whatever project you were first involved
in apache, you're covered.

In the unlikely event that we don't have a CLA from you, then we might
have a problem. But if not, the CLA covers that.

Meaning that if you commit stuff you don't own, and somebody comes after
us, you (and not the ASF or this project) are to blame.
