I'm not sure if this is board 'worthy' but one thing I've been meaning
to ask is what the process might be once a Lab gets to a point where
it might be worth considering exiting labs. I certainly don't think
Pinpoint is there yet, but I'm aiming that way, and I'm not sure I
fully understand that process. I don't think any Lab as promoted yet
so perhaps there's no precedence, but some clarity there might
encourage Lab folks to plan towards that, or at least not consciously
go down a road that would prohibit it.
My personal vision is that if a lab manages to find more than one person
that is interested in it, and they are both apache committers, they
should ask incubator@ to consider moving it from labs to incubation.
Or rather, labs votes to "sponsor/shepherd" the project into the incubator,
just as every other PMC is encouraged to do (with a final designation tagged
either towards TLP, or as a subproject of some other corner of the ASF).
The process shouldn't be more complicated than that: there is no
preferential lane for labs projects in theory, but in practice I'm sure
the incubator would treat a lab differently from they would consider a
project coming from strangers from the outside.
Right - I doubt we'll ever document it, because 1) labs folks are already
ASF committers and 2) incubator is doing a lovely job of explaining the
entry, care and feeding, and exit processes.
