Thankyou for the explanation.  I was wondering about 'going south' =
'failure' . We have an expression
'deked' as in leaving quickly from someplace. "The stocks were falling
fast so s/he deked" (it's also an ice hockey term, to fake a move).

..where was I...
"Gone south" also implies a vacation if you live 'north'
but if the stocks have 'gone south' then they've taken a dive...
