I think you want to try something like MS Access - it's a pretty slick
little tool, and fairly straightforward to use, and teach yourself to
use.  

I taught myself with Access  1.0 many eons ago, and created my own dbs
for my bobbins and books.  

Access's gone through many updates since 1992/3, but I think is still
pretty simple to use.  I think it still allows you to import from other
programs, produce reports and queries, etc, and in larger use situations
allows you to hook it onto a SQL Server front or back end (don't
remember which - DH is the Access smartie-pants).  It's designed for
small use, but can handle quite large applications.

No affiliation with MS, just a 'techno-peasant' user.
