Firstly, I do hope Martha has seen the replies to her christening gown
question over on lace. Even though she asked about it on chat, it's getting
a larger audience on lace.

Secondly the discussion on UFOs over on lace has prompted me to ask for help
here because this isn't lace related.

I have a quantity of single different coloured whole balls of mohair (apart
from a few in black for cuffs, bottom edge and neck). It's not even a UFO
because I've had them for at least 18 years and haven't even started making
anything with them. The plan was to make a multi-coloured sweater with a
zig-zag pattern, but my hands won't let me pick up stitches from the side
edge as is needed for the pattern I have. What I'm looking for is a simple
random patchwork-type pattern for a sweater with multi-coloured
squares/rectangles as I think I could probably still manage to knit
something like that in short bursts. I could work one out for myself, but
that would take time to work out the area that one ball would cover - I'd
rather spend that time lacemaking if someone knows the source of a
ready-made pattern.

The alternative is to wait for inspiration and try using them to make
something in bobbin lace, but I think it would be very difficult to handle.
