Unfortunately I can't get at yesterday's 'Working Lunch' programme on the BBC website, but I'm certain that the ICSTIS regulator said that broadband was now being hit by these diallers, but can't remember the details of how the fraudsters did it. It's really annoying when the archive for these programmes, isn't a full archive.
One person on NTL broadband, had a BT phone line which he used just for occasional faxes, and this was hit even though the line wasn't used for internet or email access. UK-online say "If you're using UK Online Broadband, a rogue dialler shouldn' t affect you at all. However, you can make sure you are 100% safe simply by ensuring that your old dial-up modem isn't plugged into the phone line, or is completely removed from your PC." surefish.co.uk say "The risks from diallers are significantly reduced by switching to broadband, though some experts say it is not entirely safe." This from http://forums.itweek.co.uk/thread.jsp?forum=11&thread=37142 "Hi, Just wanted to warn everyone about diallers placed onto your PC by web sites. We had a £25 charge on our phone bill, which we did not recognise. Our telephone provider advised it was a internet service, we have Broadband and have no need for diallers. I remember Spybot picking up a dialler in our system some time ago, which I deleted. The UK telephone watchdog ICSTIS, identified the telephone number (0906 734 0024) as going to a German company , ICSTIS gave me their contact info but advised they cannot fight any case for us, but they have fined this company £4,000 for breaching certain rules and were issued with a 'formal reprimand'. The company however advised us we authorised the charges, which were for an IQ test (our daughter does access these). We argued we would never agree to pay anything and that the funds have been taken dis-honestly from us. This company are now ignoring my messages, as I asked them to show me thier web link so I can see how it is possible to authorise these charges. as they have not done so, I bevieve thay are theives. I have not mentioned the company for legal reasons here, but I will if anyone wants to know privately. Good luck I hope this does not happen to anyone else."
