<g> It does come from the "salsa" you know - the tomato, onion, usually also sweet and hot peppers and vinegar - mix, used in cooking, or as a dip, or in other ways. It's typical of Latin America, as Helen said. So, pretty soon, the music that was heard around the cafes and bars frequented by Latinos also began to be called "salsa". Then the term moved on to the dance style associated with that kind of music... And that's what's being taught :)


Language and its gyrations is the most fascinating thing, second only to *general* human behaviour; I still love it more than lace (though not *much* more <g>)
