Hi All,

The talk of snails is making my mouth water! We have collected the winkles
(marine snails?) and cockles for years, and they are put into a bucket with
flour and water, so they can get rid of the sand. Which is why I never eat
the commercially prepared varieties - the sand is never removed - presumably
it takes too long if you are a commercial company, selling them - so all you
can taste is the grit against your teeth. Horrible! But cockles are
lovely with bread and butter, after a day in the flour and water, and cooked
by being boiled in a pan of boiling, lightly salted water.

Carol - in Suffolk UK - close to Norfolk UK where the best cockles are
found!
