we had a horrible night here in tennessee. i work in a nursing home
with about 120 people ( not sure of the total number) and because of
the tornadoe warnings they all had to be moved in the middle of the
hallways all night until they gave an "All clear" call.
my job is working in the kitchen, so the evening meal had to be served
in the hallway where they were in case the tornadoe hit, and all we
could give them was a sandwich, a small carton of milk like you get in
the school lunch line, and a styrofoam cup full of potatoe chips and a
piece of cake on a small plate. they couldn't hold hardly anything in
thier hands because some are so crippled, and some just dropped in on
the floor.
just when one warning ended another would come in. i called home while
waiting to see when we would start serving the meal and talked to my
brother for a few minutes and he told me my other brother had just
watched 3 tornadoes go by near his house. the tornadoes did hit ground
a few times along their path and one time tearing down a trailer court
not far from where they live. a lot of people are without power right
now. my mom and dad who live in town said they went out to the old
storm cellar next to their house to sit, but they said nothing
happened. the wind did get high a few times.
the local police are out now checking on people and moving fallen
trees, and they canceled school for the kids already. the power must
be out at the schools! i watched at work through the windows, but i
didn't see anything but lightning, rain, and some greenish looking
clouds. the only thing unusual i saw was when the dark clouds started
pushing towards each other instead of moving in one direction, but no
wind bursts or gusts, just rain. we got really lucky to have missed
being hit by them.
i'll hear all the damage reports tomorrow. i know for sure the radar
on the news showed 5 possible tornadoes moving towards us and another
off above us in another city. i was glad to see the night end for me.
it was totally confusing to me and to all those poor residents.
the certified nurses' assitants (CNAs)did a really good job taking care
of them all keeping them quiet and happy. half the night the CNAs were
the only ones who knew what they were doing because our nurses had
never done this before. they did the drills, but didn't know what to
do with serving the meals. it was a really interesting night for me!!
we work with some really nice people who do thier jobs well. i think
if we hadn't have had such nice CNAs who had so many years experience
we might have been in much more trouble with caring for these residents
correctly. they did a great job!! i know i was happy to see the night
end!!
