I use: www.kaspersky.com for anti-virus/trojan detection etc.
There is a home version and a professional one; I believe the home-version is still free.

I also use Adaware to get rid of tracking cookies etc. - again there is a free version on CNET.com
and Spybot to detect hackers etc. - again CNET.com will probably have this.

They are updatable, and between them detect almost anything.

If your computer slows down because of your anti-virus or other software, go to "run" in your startup menu, and type in "msconfig" and OK.
The last tap says "startup"; click on it and then un-tick your anti-virus.
That way it does not start at startup, and you run it manually instead.
