Just read the Snopes comments on this - thanks Devon - and noticed that at
the end they made the general comment that it is far better to make sure the
car is well serviced, has the correct tyre pressures and not to carry
unnecessary weight around.

However, it didn't occur to them to say that if you always keep your fuel
tank at least half full, you are always carrying 20+ litres of fuel as cargo.
Petrol is 0.74 the weight of water, so each litre of petrol weighs about
740grams. One of our small English cars has a 50 litre tanks so full the fuel
is
37kilos, half full therefore 18.5kilos. A bit like carrying a sack of potatoes
all the time. And the bigger your tank, the more this would apply

It would be interesting to compare the extra fuel needed to carry the extra
fuel around, with the amount of fuel lost to evaporation in the tank.

Jacquie, just getting ready to leave to teach lace in Malaga.

It feels a bit like coals to Newcastle as they have three teachers going from
Italy, and I'm going from England to teach a Milanese lace class.
