Dear Friends,

Doesn't David live in the Victoria area?
If you read this, can you let us know you are ok?
Breathe easy, I have managed to survive yesterday's inferno. For once there weren't any fires close to Ballarat. It has now turned out to be our worst ever fire disaster with over 700 homes lost and so far 84 confirmed dead. I'm afraid there will be many more though.

My brother was not quite so fortunate. He lives in the country town of Broadford and in fact wasn't even aware there were fires nearby until I phoned him at about 3:00pm yesterday. Because the temperature was so unbearable at 48 degrees C (118.4F) he had locked himself inside and was playing computer games!! At that stage the fires were at Wandong - about 15km south of him. He immediately went out and worked with the fire fighters and was with the Fire Chief when they discovered the first 4 bodies at Wandong. Thank goodness he's a cool calm psych nurse. The winds have now turned 180 degrees and tonight his town of Broadford is under threat. Their town water supply has become polluted and they are having to be extremely careful.

David
