*Lace Centre Brugge in administration*

The Lace Centre, which has organized lace making courses for almost 40 years, is in administration. The decision thereto was taken in a special meeting on Thursday evening. Today the four members of staff were informed of the decision. Their contracts have been terminated.

Financial problems lie at the heart of the decision. The Lace Centre had been trying to find alternative financing after the Province of West Flanders stopped paying subsidies three years ago.

1970 The Lace Centre was founded in 1970 with the purpose of continuing the schooling in lace craft. This schooling was started in 1717 by the Apostolic nuns. In those days Bruges went through a period of hardship. By making lace many families could earn an income.

Recently, the Lace Centre sounded the alarm bell as the buildings they were using were to be used for a different purpose. The Centre is based next to the Jerusalem church. The owner of the church and accessory buildings is looking at using the buildings for something else. Without a lender the Lace Centre could not find a new location. Neither the Bruges Town council nor the government offered any financial assistance.
