We had one of those - Mum called it a poss stick. One of Mum's friends got a washing machine (a Hoover, I think) - a twin tub, two small top-loading tubs side by side with a little agitator in the side to swish the clothes around. She lent it to Mum for a couple of weeks! We filled it with a hosepipe from the kitchen tap, and emptied it through a little tap low down on one side. There was an electric wringer between the two tubs, so we transferred the clothes from the hot soapy water through the wringer into the other tub full of rinsing water, and back again into the emptied first tub before hanging them out in the garden. Mum wasn't that impressed, and it was years before we got a washing machine of our own - a Hotpoint top-loader.
