Gentle Spiders,
Friday (4th) was a lovely day; the rain threatened, but held off, so
that people who took part/went to see the parade got their pleasure.
And I got mine; a light-grey day lets me make lace till almost supper
time (my lace, unlike the proverbial hay, does not like the sun shining
<g>)
Then Saturday (very sunny and hot), brought lacy mail, as so often
happens after a day of "mail drought". My newest, time-to-renew, IOLi
Summer Bulletin came. With some changes :)
It seems that we now be able to renew/start our subscriptions at *any
point of the year* and still remain "au courrant" (or however you spell
it <g>); the Bulletin has moved to the *magazine* (rather than a guild
newsletter) system of distribution. That is, no more back issues;
you'll get 4 *current* issues, starting with the nearest *after* your
subscription, no matter when you subscribe... Apparently, this will be
to the IOLi's advantage financially; less guessing about how many
copies *might* be needed (among other things)
I don't know who thought that one up, but, if I had 10 thumbs (as my
Mother claimed I did <g>), I'd stick them *all* up :) This is something
I thought ought to have been done long ago. I've been known to advise
prospective members to hold off their joining until July-August; "you
join in February, you get all the back issues which will be of little
use to you, as far as information about upcoming events goes. OTOH, if
you join with the first issue of the year, you can always borrow the
back ones from the library".
*Many thanks*, to all responsible for the change. It'll probably cause
a bit of a problem also (trying to keep track of whose subscription
expires when and sending a reminder to those people only) but, as long
as you keep enough extra copies for the library (say, 4 for lending,
and one for Archives), the whole thing ought to be soooo much better...
The rest of the Bulletin was also an unadulterated pleasure (I maybe
getting spoiled, with Debra Jenny as the editor <g>); I love it when I
can cross-check the names of contributors with those who show up on
Arachne, and there were several.
Kenn Van Dieren has a pattern -- Torchon, but with a difference (well,
several differences, depending on which elements of it you choose to
put together and how <g>). Janice Blair has a pattern -- a tape tulip
in colour which, like more and more of her patterns is both
"accessible" to a relative novice *and* attractive enough in its visual
simplicty to be tempting to a more advanced lacemaker (make it as a
bookmark for your next fund-raiser? The perfect addition to her Celtic
thistle for a lace-flower collector?) Anne Moore (*rarely* posts, but
is still here, I think) has a lovely PG insertion with hearts and
flowers in it; the hearts "march" down (not sideways, as is more
common) and *still* manage to remain nicely plump and well-filled,
without any pairs added or subtracted.
But, for me, the real "cream" was Devon Thein's article "Schiffli
Romance"... It's an absolute *must* for everyone who's taking that
particular tour (Lace Factory) on "The Touring Wednesday", and
well-worth reading for everyone else... I giggled all the way through
it -- Devon has a unique way of combining dry sense of humour with
excellent writing, while loading the whole with lots of pertinent
information. I hope to see many more of her articles (there were two in
the Spring issue, I was afraid it might be a feast-or-famine situation)
in the future issues...
PS Does anyone know of a -- *not* web-only, by preference -- source of
stranded (embroidery) silk in the US? I got my basic thread for the
Lohr workshop and getting the DMC cotton (for gimp) will be no problem,
but I think I'd rather have silk. The base thread is matte silk
(Gutermann), and I think it would look nice with shiny gimp... I need
very light pink (no idea how much, so better overload <g>)
