My favorite illustration of how relative values have changed is from a class on Slovak lace by Radmilla Zuman. When we make lace for clothes, we put it in a spot that will be relatively safe from wear--when the clothing wears out, we remove the lace and put it onto a new garment. The Slovak peasant lace was made to *protect* the garment--they put it onto the cuffs so when the lace wore out, they'd put new lace onto the shirt. Cloth was expensive, lace (relatively coarse, self-made lace) was cheap! Robin P.
