I wonder if the thread used in your pattern is the DMC Special
Dentelles 80? This is the same thickness as the DMC Fil a Dentelles 70

can find listed in Brenda's book which is 3 ply, except for a Spanish
80/3 which is very fine.(Hilatura Finca Bolillos)

Fil a Dentelles / Special Dentelles is a SIX ply thread. When you first untwist it it looks like a 3ply but each of those plys will untwist again into 2 plies each. That's why the spin is listed as 2S/3Z.

However, that does illulstrate well the point that Clay made about some threads being compact and firm whilst others are lighter and fluffier.
Finca 80/3 measured at 27 wraps/cm, and being a 3 ply cotton 80 x 840 yards will weigh 3lbs. 67,200 yards = 3lb
Special Dentelles 80 measured at 30 wraps/cm, a bit finer than the Finca, but being 6ply the 67,200 yards will weigh 6lbs.
That is because the Finca is a much looser spin and holds a lot more air than the more compact Special Dentelles. One yard of Special Dentelles contains twice as many cotton fibres as one yard of Finca but comes out as a finer thread.
