In 1992 I joined an embroidery and textile tour to Bulgaria. Yes I did find
lace for sale in the museum shop of the Capital city, Sophia. I also bought
bobbins from Lovech. They are the wooden ones with a removable wooden collar
to keep the thread clean.

The lace is a cross between the Polish Bobowa and Cluny. I have scanned the
mat and the bobbins, also photos I took of a lace-maker working at the
bolster pillow which is hard, cylindrical and narrow in diameter. I am
sending all to Lori in the hope she can please put on her Web-site.

I also bought several hankies with the Oya-type lace on and a lovely book
about it, it is like Armenian needle-lace but of course they call it
Bulgarian needle-lace. I was in this drapery shop in the middle of Sophia,
the capital. The hankies were under glass in a display counter. The
shop-assistant prised open the glass with a knife and drew one hankie out. I
asked to see the other, so she put the first one back before she took the
second one out, The same thing happened with the third one! It took
several minutes to explain that I wanted to buy all three. Someone told me
that they did not like selling stock as when it was gone, there might not be
more and they would be out of a job.
