There are many superstitions in regard to lace. Besides the spangles - and
one should always have a "Snake Eye" spangle on your pillow - to turn away
the evil eye, and prevent mistakes! , you should keep a leopard bobbin on
the pillow to help prevent arthritis! - A leopard is a wooden bobbin, with
pewter spots. (Wood with pewter stripes around it is a tiger!)
And NEVER start a new piece of lace on a Friday!
Friday was an Inauspicious Day , and no new project should be started then.
This superstition goes way back to Medaeval times, when they would never set
out on a journey on a Friday. It was an Old superstition in Henry VIII's
time, but still, my Grandmother would never start a new piece of lace on
that day. It always went wrong if she did, she reckoned! The one narrow 9
pin edge that I learned with her was started late on a Thursday night , so
we got 3 or 4 pins in, and so was not started on the next day! She was not
a superstitious person, but she always held to that one.
Neither (DD) Helen nor I start a piece on a Friday, either. If it was good
enough for Grandma - we figure it is good enough for us!!!
