It doesn't have to be a fibretip pen, mapping pens or a fountain pen can also be used providing the nib is fine. The thing that does matter though is that the ink MUST be waterproof, smudgeproof and not of the biro/bic/ball-point pen type. Waterproof Indian ink or acrylic calligraphy ink are the ones to go for if you use a refillable nib pen. To test if a pen is suitable make a little scribble with it and allow the ink to dry, then lick your finger and rub over it - if it smudges it's not suitable for marking a pricking with. Biro pens often seem reasonably OK with this test but I wouldn't depend on it. pencil will nearly always smudge.

The other thing to be aware of is that some inks and photocopy toners react with the adhesive in the clear or blue plastic. Whilst the ink won't get onto the lace if you cover the pricking with plastic I have seen some examples where the markings underneath are so blurred that the pattern has been practically unworkable.

If you aren't confident drawing the lines on your pricking, then be all means
you it lightly in pencil first. Draw the permanent lines in a waterproof
fibretip type pen and then use a soft eraser to remove any traces of pencil as
this will rub off onto the lace.

Do not use a biro type pen,
