Well, Nova, as I'm sure this was a rhetorical question, I
have to be obtuse and just jump in and say, "They don't...
only the owner of the book profits from that exchange."

But you already knew that, didn't you!    ; )  But in
fairness, by selling the book the seller also sells all
rights to copy (or use previously copied) designs which are
in the book.  But that isn't usually an issue, since sellers
of old books are not interested using them any more, or they
would keep them.
