Hello, I hope that you can help me. I have been trying to find out when
Battenberg Lace came to America. I am in a Civil War Re-enactment group and would like a parasol made of Battenberg Lace, but not sure if it was in
America in 1860.
I think the answer is No. The book :Battenberg and Other Tape laces", printed by Butterick Publishing in 1988 is a reprint of "Modern Lace Making" by Sara Hadley in 1901.
Sara starts out by saying" Modern lace as illustrated throughout this book is of recent origin....." Butterick adds a note that this form of lace was from the end of the nineteenth and start of the twentieth century. From this I conclude that the Battenberg form of lace was developed well after the 1860's. The printer says that Sara herself developed the Royal Battenberg style of lace.
Sorry, but the parasol of Battenberg would not be 'period' to the Civil War.
