I think the lace panel probably went to the wrong auction house Aren't Philips reckoned to be the most specialised lace/textiles auctioneers in UK?

Yes the Battle of Britain panels are huge - and I hold them in high esteem. It was seeing one (or rather about half of one) displayed in a local department store window which first got me making BL.

After two miscariages in quick succession I had a great urge to be creative and if I couldn't make another baby then I wanted to make something else. I stood looking at the panel for as long as the 3 year old would let me. I knew it wasn't knitted, or crocheted, or woven but I hadn't got a clue as to how it had been made. I'd recently seen lacemaking classes advertised so I went along and signed up. The rest is history (and I was pregnant with the twins by the end of the first year of classes).

I could not believe it when the panel come up for auction there were just 8 people left in the room. We were asked to start bidding at 5,000 pounds, you could hear a pin drop. Not a sound, suddenly the auctioneer says NOT SOLD.
