I use a bolster-like pillow for needlelace, with a dowel under the "active" area. When I took a class at Ithaca, the teacher (sorry, can't remember her name even though she was a great teacher) showed us that method and folding the work over your finger. I was uncomfortable with the over-the-finger method.
