When I was in England in November for my mum's funeral, my dad told each of us that we could choose a piece of jewellery.

I picked a little silver brooch which was in a little jewellery box from Widnes which is where my great-grandparents lived and where my grandmother was born - I thought that perhaps it had belonged to my gran and had then been passed on to mum, thereby being doubly treasured.

It wasn't until I got home and was looking at it a little more clearly that I found it has a little glass covered receptacle in the back and I realised that it was probably a piece of Victorian mourning jewellery - there is no hair in it.

I also have a Victorian mourning ring somewhere - there is no hair in that either.

Malvary in Ottawa, where the sun is shining brightly and spring has got to be on its way - although it is going to snow tomorrow (Again!)
