Gentle Spiders,
Those of you who read chat are familiar with my occasional forwarding of a snippet from the electronic news bulletin I get from Poland. This time, I was moved to put it on lace, because of the content. From today's (March 29) issue (followed by a *literal* translation, and my comments in parentheses):
Krol i krolowa Belgow
spedzili swieta z Aleksandrem Kwasniewskim w rezydencji prezydenckiej w odremontowanym zameczku w Wisle. W programie byl pokaz koronek w Koniakowie, swiecenie jajek, koncert na trombicie i zyczenia od mlodych goralek z gaikiem. Dzis belgijska para zwiedza Krakow i Wieliczke.
The King and and the Queen of the Belgues (of Belgium)
spent the holidays (Easter) with Aleksander Kwasniewski (the president of Poland) in the presidential residence in the reconstructed (little) castle in Wisla (a resort town in the south of Poland). In the program, there was a show of Koniakow laces, blessing of eggs, a "trombita" (the word doesn't appear in my dictionary, but I don't think it's "trombone"; I think it's a peculiar, wooden instrument played in the mountains) concert, and and best wishes from young mountain maidens who came with a "gaik" (a green "concoction" composed of twigs and plants of early spring). Today, the Belgian pair is touring Krakow and Wieliczka (Wieliczka is where the salt mines are)

Even if showing Koniakow laces (piece lace, crocheted, in fairly coarse thread) to the royal couple of Belgium is a bit like carrying coals to Newcastle, I'm still pleased they *were* shown as part of the "treasure" of that region. I'm even more pleased that, in the list of "welcoming delights", lace was mentioned *first of all*
