I have been quiet on this list for a long time, but I have not disappeared.
Life has thrown a few curved balls this way during the past year,
culminating when my mother who lived with us fell and broke her hip and
despite the broken bone being pinned and repaired beautifully, never fully
recovered in herself. She passed away a week ago at the age of 90 and 1
month.
Anyway on the day after her funeral when I was feeling a bit low, I received
a fax announcing an exhibition of Czech bobbin lace (accompanied by a real
Czech lacemaker) to be presented in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town.
That cheered me up immediately!
It has been organised by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in co-opertaion
with the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce & Industry, but the JCCI obviously
does not think that there is any interest in culture in Johannesburg as
Pretoria and Cape Town each have the exhibition on for a week, while poor
old JHB only has it for one morning, and next Monday morning at that.
When I phoned the embassy to find out more about it they said that the JHB
morning was going to be cancelled as they only had one other enquiry. I
could not let that happen so I assured them that there were stacks of people
who would be interested in seeing it and I would notify them all. Therefore
I have spent the past 24 hours emailing and telephoning all the lacemakers
and embroiderers etc that I can think of.
I am sure that I have enough responses now to make it worth their while to
stage the exhibition and I will report back to you afterwards. If anyone
would like to know more about the dates and venues, please get in touch and
I will forward the info.
