It's from "Russian Lace Patterns" by Anna Korableva and Bridget M.Cook. There are lots of pretty and interesting patterns in that book. Sue has personalised it -- and improved it, IMO -- by changing its mane to half-stitch.
I never knew _just what_ had bugged me about that pattern, but now I do :) It's a simple change, but extremely effective; suddenly, the mane is no longer "congested" and too "busy", but but is flowing as it should...
