First, thanks to those who've written with suggestions -- Jenny Brandis and Charlotte Moore privately and Bev here, on the list -- please keep them coming, because even if I don't use a suggestion, every litle bit helps to clarify, in my mind, what it is i want out of my catalogue.

Name the field Category?

I like that! Charlotte suggested "lace" but "Lace books" is going to be the title of the whole list/database/document (whatever <g>)

What do I name a field which tells me that, within BL, it's Point
Ground, or Flanders, or Freehand? Is that "technique"?

Something along the line of 'lace-by-given-name' and just a suggestion:
you might want sub-divisions for traditional, traditional adapted,
traditional re-invented <g>, modern and/or original.

Goodness, no! :) Or, not as separate fields, at any rate. I can't see myself ever having to sort things out by those. I still think that something like "technique" or "style" would be best as the field title. Then, the rubric can be filled out with "Torchon" or "Torchon, floral" or "Point Ground, Bucks, geometric" "Point Ground, Tönder", etc.

What I'm after, I think, is a minimum of fields, with each field being as comprehensive as possible. That is, a field like "binding" in the template will cover hardbound, softbound, spiral-bound, portfolio, loose sheets/folder etc.

At least to begin with, when a couple of hundred books will have to be "hand-fed" into the maw of the machine; eventually, things can be fine-tuned, if it proves necessary, and more fields added. For the time being, all the info I don't expect to search by will go into the grab-bag of "comments" (or "notes". Haven't decided yet).

And what about a
field name which distinguishes a manual from a history book, from a
collection of patterns, from a collection of photograps?

Format?

Um... I don't know... Somehow, I think of "format" as applying more to things like "hardbound book" vs "magazine" -- which will go into "binding".

Jenny suggested having fields like "patterns", to be filled in with "yes" or "no" and a field/fields which would allow for listing contents (doilies, motifs, edgings, bookmarks, etc) . That didn't quite answer my needs, since most pattern books are compilations of all or most of the above but it did suggest a field title of "contents" which might allow for all sorts of things like "prickings; doilies and edgings", "photos" "technical tips" etc. Alternatively, "type/contents" would cover all of those ("type" is thanks to Charlotte). Something to think about and I'll welcome more food for thought.

Yours, gratefully,
T
