Don't get worried about the wide corner.  The corner
will 'fix' itself when it is off the pins and sewn to
fabric with a 90 degree angle on the fabric.  The
headside of the lace stretches around the corner, and
will lie flat when completed.  The lace is flexible
once it's unpinned.  The headside will have more
flexibility than the footside.  
The wider corner is deliberately put in the pattern to
produce a flat hanky edging when sewn on the hanky.  I
made one edging this way and it worked.
