Hi Agnes and Spiders,

I have bought several lots of the emery powder in the past, and made small
pincushions for myself, and others, and have never had any trouble with the
powder getting onto the lace. The emery powder isn't really like talcum
powder, and very smooth - it is more like a fine sand, so doesn't tend to
escape the pin cushion, so long as one uses a quite sturdy fabric in which
to put the emery. I use a sort of ticking - that old bolster (bed - not
lace!) pillows used to be covered in - and then put all that inside a
prettier material, and sometimes even put lace around the edges of same.
They do seem to be good for the pins, but what I have also seen is an
'ordinary' pincushion, filled with whatever one usually fills pin cushions,
and then, attached to this 'mother' pin cushion by a very posh tasselled
braid, a minuscule emery powder pincushion, which you jab the pins into
every now and again. Very pretty, and no doubt that works well too ...

Hope this helps, but I am sure there will be as many opinions as there are
respondents to the thread!
