Hi Helen -

Yes, you do use smaller thread to do the lassen than you used for your lace, 
but it does not have to be "much finer".    My "stash" of thread that I use is 
the 185/2, although when I've worked with 120/2, I may use 170/2 instead.  The 
only time you would have trouble finding a finer thread would be if you worked 
the lace with 185/2.  In that case, I would just use the 185/2.  

My suggestion would be that for your first project of joining, you plan to work 
on lace made with heavier thread.  (100/2 or 120/2, using 140 or 170 to work 
the lassen)  While the process is not difficult, it can be tedious, and the 
larger thread would make it easier to see what you're doing.
