I remember seeing a programme on UKTV History (think it might have been one
of the "What the ........ did for us", which covered various eras from the
ancients, Romans, Tudors and Stuarts through to the Victorians), when the
discovery that something (saffron? onion skins?) dyed fabric bright yellow.
Obviously it would have been a natural fibre, and, having discovered it, it
was used extensively. The one thing that sticks in my mind was very bright
yellow plain curtains hung from the tops of very high windows down to the
floor - they were that enthusiastic about the new yellow. So, if Brilliana
Lady Harley was around during this period, that might explain starched
yellow ruffs and bands.
Can anyone else in the UK remember seeing this?
