I just browsed part of lacereader.com webpage. In her blog she says that lace
reading is something she made up for the story.

On another page where history of lace is described, she says that pins are used
to make the holes in the pattern. Then when making lace, "pins are left in and
thread wound around the pins". From this I would conclude that she never made
any lace herself but just used the subject as the theme for her story. She
also didn't have a lacemaker edit her comments on lacemaking.

As a side note, she says that at festivals in Salem where lacemakers dress in
costume, they now do lace readings for people even though the idea never
existed before the book.

Alice in Oregon -- avoiding going outside in this heat wave unless I really
have to. Added an inch to my 12" wide shawl.

Subject: [lace] The Lace Reader

Is there a science called "lace reading" that I have never heard of, or is it
just a neat idea for the story? I know there are palm readers, tea leaf and
card readers. It mentions a story in the lace. Can anyone remember from
reading the book how it was described?

The only story in my lace is what a mess I make sometimes.
