I was taught to tie a reef knot, then one more single knot (3 knots), and then to couch down the knot onto the lace using one of the 4 threads. This way the know will stay out of sight, and the ends are trimmed away close to the knot. It can be a bit lumpy sometimes, but the knots Never come undone or loose!
