Thanx Patsy

It was the latter the plan I had mind- I want a gold main dress with a black
over-lay of lace on the bodice; and time dependent maybe some similar piece
over the skirt; maybe to one side or with a split down the front. I hope to
make this huge effort for my own wedding dress and would rather it was at
least part hand-made but it looks like a major commitment and maybe I should
get started NOW! Does anyone have any clues for sources to suitable patterns
or would self design more likely be easier? I was trying to work out whether
making one long section and wrap it round and hand sew along the boned
sections or make sections to lie within the bone-ing. The size and style in
the photos by chezfanny 39-42 (sent by Dom) looks to be ideal. Could someone
clarify the description- is the lace actually made in 1860 or is it made
from a pattern from 1860? My rusty French suggests the former....

As always many thanks for any input

Rhiannon,

Many years ago I made a gown with a lace over lay on the bodice. But with
this project I used expensive machine made lace. I basted the lace to the
brocade satin base fabric before any sewing took place. Then sewed the
bodice together which included the darts and seams and all. But if I were
to use "Hand made lace" I don't think I would do it that way. I would want
to be able to remove the hand made lace at some point to put on an other
garment. I think I would make the plain bodice first then hand stitch the
hand made lace on top so it could be easily removed.

Good Luck
