It is my understanding that the outlines of motifs would be couched because
that is what determines the shape of the motif.  But brides are connections
between motifs, and are put there to prevent large holes in the lace; they
give it more stability.  And the important thing is that they attach two
motifs to each other.  They would not be couched.  Instead 3 passes of the
lace thread would be laid across the opening: going there, coming back, going
there again.  And now, with the needle AWAY that same thread buttonholes over
the 3 passes that you have just laid down.  Picots and additional decoration
would be added where you want them.
