The only throwing out I've done is to reduce the number of bobbins at the
finishing end of scrolls in Bruges lace or at the pointed end of a torchon
bookmark, if I didn't want to make a tassel.
What I was taught was to throw out two separate bobbins with one thread to
remain in between for a pointed end book mark, or with a few threads between
in an area of cloth stitch in a Bruges scroll. The fact that the threads
between are out of kilter in the row below with regards to over/under, that
doesn't really show when the work is finished. In both cases, I just lay
them back and cut them off close to the work either further down the work or
when the piece is finished. The cut ends stay securely in place because they
are trapped.
