Anybody remember the Arachne raffle in support of the Luton Museum's
drive to refurbish and re-curate their Lace Dealer's Pattern Book?
Members donated lace-oriented things and people bought chances (I don't
remember having physical tickets, but it was a long time ago). I seem
to remember Arachne raised significant funds for that,
There were actual tickets, each person who bought a ticket had their
name recorded on what is known here as a "cloakroom ticket" and these
were folded up and put into a bag/box (I can't remember which) for the
draw. The "counterfoils" were not sent out as it would have taken a huge
chunk in postage out of the funds raised for the museum. I was one of
the group that met at Pat Hallam's house to witness the draw, and have
photographs somewhere. (I can remember Pat, Margaret Allen, Steph
Peters, Margery Allcock, Jacqui Southworth and Amanda Richards being
there, amongst others).
However, afterwards we found out that international raffles where money
changes hands do come under certain laws (up until that time Pat, who is
a Magistrate, had looked into it and couldn't find anything that
suggested that what we were doing was illegal) and so since that time
all raffles on Arachne have been free.
I am sure some idea for fundraising could be found, but with
international laws being complex we need to be careful that what is done
is legal!
