In answer to Lora's query, I have a Victorian black silk mourning dress (separate sleeved top and skirt, that would have been worn attached, plus over skirt) which is decorated with black yak lace embellished with French 'jet' (glass) beads. I daresay that most other types of lace were also used for clothes, since in Victorian times so many people were in mourning for so much of the time! Sandi. In sunny but cold Rochester, Kent, UK.
