Hello All! The inter-library loan dept. scored again--The Art of Tatting just arrived & what a book! Thank you for posting the recommendation. I wanted to add my 2c to the discussion of textiles as art because they are rarely considered such. For some reason, textile arts are always in the craft section, even though no glue was used!! Sigh. Too bad that those who decide what art "is", have not seen this book. It would be hard to call these examples a craft! Definitely not grandmother's tatted hankie. They are an eye opener for me, both to ecclesiastical applications & applique techniques. I've seen a few chalice covers along the way but never saw a tatted one until now. Nor had I seen tatting appliqued on net. Wow & double wow! The intro by HM the Queen of Roumania was very sweet & perceptive. How things have changed since 1920, yet remained the same! So--what is art? Why is something that is artfully made not considered art? And why is something inelegantly made, possibly by zoo animals, considered to be so? And what to do about "textile artists" who jam up local shows with a multitude of wretched examples--sorry--dreck with a mission statement is still dreck! Who's the judge who said he couldn't define pornography, but he knew it when he saw it? Is that where we are with art? Off the soap box now. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA
