Totally unrelated to lace, but a Velcro circle (not sure if you can
still get them - Velcro is sold as a pair of tapes - one hook and one
loop - use the hook one) stuck on the top of a cotton reel or old film
canister is brilliant for removing hair from plug holes! Would probably
work for lifting persistent bits of thread from lace pillows, too.
