Expand a bit more: Fabric made of holes surrounded by thread. When things are made from something other than thread, they are usually referred to as paper lace, wire lace, knitted lace. Or termed 'lacy' rather than 'lace'. Or they have a separate name, i.e. Hardanger, Drawn work, macrame.
