I also taught myself from the Doris Southard book. I had a difficult time as
it
is very wordy and I work better from diagrams, but I persisted and before I
found a lace group in this area I had taught myself the basics. It is still on
my shelf and I would not part with it. I got my first copy from the library
and
also used the vendors in the back to find a local shop. The shop had moved
from
the address listed to another town but I tracked it down. I made my DH take 40
miles me in about 3 feet of snow so that I could go and buy a copy for myself
and there I found one spool of linen thread (pink). It turned out the shop was
really for weavers so carried very few BL supplies. They took my name and
number and finally I got connected with the local group, the rest is history.

I sent Doris a birthday card for one of her milestone birthdays and she wrote
back a four page letter of encouragement. Thank you Doris.
