David, thank you for the scarf pattern - it should knit up nicely lacy. I looked up the gauge for 5-ply crepe: 26 Stitches and 35 Rows to 10 cm on 3.75 needles, so something like a lightwieght #5 or sport weight or 4-ply fingering here.
