I prefer to use wire, and have switched from brass to 0.40 or 0.45mm stainless steel wire: it is stronger and keeps its shape well. Just have to remember to use hardened cutters or riks the wrath of my husband for ruining another pair of expensive pliers.

Wire used to be used all the time because that's what was available.
Fishing line/monofilament, dental floss, beading thread, wire - use
whatever you like that works for you :)

I like the way of the beads on wire and that is my preference.
I find with the others the beads flop around.
