Tapestry bobbins will hold a fair amount of yarn but can be expensive. I used dowels inserted into wooden wheels bought at a craft shop (Michael's or AC Moore in the US). The wheels are sold in packages of 10 or 20 and are intended for making toy trucks. Mine were about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, and I put them on the end as a head, with the yarn wound below on the dowel.
