I'm pretty sure that her lacemaking didn't start until some time later - she told me once that she'd had surgery and was supposed to take thing easy for a while so she learned to make lace and hadn't stopped talking about it since! During the war years I think she was busy with the family's motor garage business, as well as looking after the children. I know Doreen's daughter Mary (Bill's twin) from Lace Guild conventions.
