Lace exhibited in the Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, May 10 to October
 6, 2013.

Not yet mentioned on Arachne is the new exhibit at the Queen's Gallery in
London. It contains lace portraits belonging to the Royal Collection, and
laces/costumes/related-to-the-paintings objects which have mostly been
borrowed from other esteemed collections to enhance the museum experience.

The pictured man's lace cloak band (collar), about 1635, was borrowed from
Barnard Castle, The Bowes Museum, Blackborne Collection. If you have the
book "Fine & Fashionable - Lace from the Blackborne Collection" by Santina
Levey and Joanna Hashagen, published in 2006, you can see this lace at the
front of their book.

The London exhibit's book says the surviving cloak band's area which would
be concealed by the wearer's hair is of plain woven linen, avoiding the
expensive lace being exposed to grease. Interesting. Van Dyck gives the
impression of band collars completely constructed of lace. This collar most
resembles the image of Charles I on the left.

This is a very well-known painting. It never really registered with me
that the three lace bands (collars) were different, and the clothing was of
different colors - black, crimson, and purple. The King is wearing his
Garter ribbon, which is also on display in the exhibition. Notice the
pear-shaped pearl earring in his left ear! Recycled from Queen Elizabeth I's
pearl
collection? (He was the second King after Elizabeth I.)

This is just one of the 3-dimensional displays in the exhibit of over 60
paintings.

We have at least one member of Arachne in London, and hopefully we will
hear more about the exhibit from him and others with lace knowledge.

A book by the curator is available. A review is being prepared, and will
be posted on Arachne.

There is a 300-page book that accompanies the exhibit, for those scholars,
historians, and costumers on Arachne. My copy was obtained quite easily
from a local book dealer. I will be reviewing the book as a separate memo
to Arachne.
